For over 175 years our Warren’s were in Virginia. Our earliest known ancestor, John Warren, was born in Virginia about 1635. Our third great grandfather, Jesse Warren, migrated from Virginia to Tennessee around 1812. Before 1869 our Great Grandfather Isaiah Warren Jr left Tennessee. After short stays in other states he migrated southwest and took root in Texas.

Warren’s, related or not, made Texas their home. The surname is more prevalent in Texas than in any other place in the world. Texas takes first place for number of Warren’s with 13,317. Virginia is 10th in the US with 4,149. Locatemyname.com found public records for 140,721 Warren’s worldwide. After the US with 131,707 Warren’s, Canada ranks a distant second with 5,544 and United Kingdom ranks an even more distant third with 1,848 (no wonder we haven’t found Warren’s across the pond that have tested with FTDNA). Warren as a popularity rank in the US is 171.

I mentioned in an earlier post that author, Roberta Estes, and her newsletter, DNAeXplained, have been immeasurably helpful to me with understanding genetic genealogy. Not that I understand that much but so so much more than when I started testing myself and family members several years ago. Roberta found a useful visual tool to easily identify ancestor migration patterns and shared that with her readers.

Roberta modified the visual to include amount of DNA inherited from each ancestor. I added names, relation, and birth years to assist my memory. I hope the tables of information below will be as helpful and interesting to you as they were to me.

Hanks, like Warren’s, are more common in Texas than anywhere else but have many times less in numbers. In Texas there are 2,003 Hanks. California comes in second with 1,049. A close third is Louisiana with 1,036. Virginia ranks 6th in the US for number of Hanks with 569. Not all Hanks are related. Regardless, most can be found in the US with a population of 14,532. The UK is a far distant second with 570. Canada is third with 111. The popularity rank for Hanks in the US is 2,172.  Click here for an analysis of Hanks at locatemyname.com.

Our Hanks’ earliest known ancestor, fourth Great Grandfather Luke Hanks (1715 – 1789), is from Virginia. He moved to South Carolina before he died. So did his Virginia born son and our 3rd great grandfather, George Hanks. Our second great grandfather, Matthew Hanks, was born in South Carolina but traveled to several states as a preacher. His son and our great grandfather, Elmus Tobe Hanks, was born in Mississippi. He migrated to Arkansas where our grandfather, Aubrey, was born. Tobe later migrated his family to Texas. The lone star state is prominent on both sides of our family.

Future posts will concentrate on our family migration in reverse going further back in time. Our next stops are east central and central Texas.
